• APOLLO Citharoedus:
Apollo the Citharist, an under-life-size bronze statue and interpretation of Greek models,
From 'The House of the Citharist', Pompeii
[Via Stabiana, Regio I., Insula 4]
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casa_del_Citarista
Discovered 1853,
C. 50 BC.
The interesting irregularities are thought to be the result of ancient Greek or Roman restorations, intended to eliminate casting defects, possibly caused by gaps or air bubbles inherent in the production process: patches of bronze were applied after the statue had been cast and assembled. [MS / Antiqvvs].
'The god Apollo is here represented in the act of playing the cithara, with his arms and fingers in a position suggestive of the musical act. The rendering of the body recalls Greek models of the 6th century BC.' [Desc Txt ©MANN]
Inv. 5630.
