"Only the head and body are ancient; they once belonged to a copy of a hunting Artemis from the 2nd c. BC.
The 17th-century restorer filled in the missing parts to make an Atalanta, the heroine of the Metamorphoses by ... Ovid, who was beaten in a race by Hippomenes.
Acquired in Rome by Cardinal Mazarin [1602-1661], the statue was bought in 1665 for the king of France, Louis XIV.
It became very famous and was copied for the park of the Chateau de Marly of the Tuileries Garden."
