"This work, which came to Florence as a gift to Francesco I. de' Medici [1574-87] from Pope Pius V. [1566-72] in 1569, has been heavily restored:
The arm, left hand, neck and head are all later additions.
The woman wears a ... peplos covered by ... himation.
The left arm may originally have held a sceptre or a torch.
The statue is likely to depict Demeter, ... in an Imperial Era version based on a Greek original model dating to some time between 400 and 300 BC."
